  • What are Incandescent Lightbulbs?
Incandescent: Since its creation in the mid to late 1800's, the carbon based filament bulb brokethrough the darkest time in our existence, literally. This pioneer, has provided light for all types of use, (i.e. Security, task, residential, commercial, street lighting, and many more). Ranging between many different wattages and sizes to accomodate any type of fixture or lightbulb holder, the Incandescent bulb was and continues to be the classic of classics. Mass production of incandescents include shapes like; BR, A-15, A21, Globes, Reflectors, S11, Tubular, flame tip, torpedo, and many more! Their life expactancy range between 2000 to 10,000 hours. Though, for it being the first bulb of its kind to illuminate many homes and businesses, it continues to be one of the most energy consuming bulbs out in the market today. Its ability to not only illuminate any area is sometimes questioned for its inability to save energy, and if its actually a good bulb to use or continue using. Its Kelvin Temperature (Color of bulb production) sets between the low 2000 to low 3000 Kelvins, which are also considered a Warm-White or Soft-White color. Very compatible with dimmer switches, (which regulate the voltage of the bulb, producing a dimming effect). Many companies are phasing out the production of incandescent, mainly because its simply not energy efficient like the CFL and LED bulbs. If you are considering purchasing Incandescent bulbs, give us a call and let us help you with your purchase, alghough limited, we can find your ideal incandescent bulb here at Houston Lightbulb & Lighting.
  • What are Halogen bulbs?
As any evolution of anykind, the Incandescnets needed to be modified, re-designed, and had to be much more powerful. Engineers combined carbon filaments and other elements such as Chlorine, iodine, and bromine to achieve the existence of the extended family of the Incandescents, Halogens. These compact, vacum sealed, bulbs, not only produced and extreme amount of heat, it provided a very noticable hue as well as brightness (which are called Lumens). Their design made it easier to apply them in smaller, hard to reach areas for both commercial and residentia applications. They were produced in many types of sizes and wattages to compete and replace some incandescents. Their Kelvin Temperatures (Color of bulb or hue) range between the low 2000 to the upper 5000 Kelvins. Voltage ranging from as low as 6volts to 480volts, and have an impressive degree spread (Which you can select between a Spot lightbulb bulb [8-25 degree] to a typical flood [30-50] . Life expectancy ranges between 2000-10000 hours and their life can be extended if a dimmer is utilized. Different Kelvins can be selected depending on the type of Halogen bulbs being used such as krypton, Xenon, and halogens. Call us today if you need to purchase your Halogen bulbs for any application.
  • What are Compact Fluorescents ?
Also known as CFL, Curly Q's, Spiral lightbulbs, or Energy Saving lightbulbs. Fluorescents are not as new as you may think. Soon after the creation of both Incandescent and Halogen bulbs, engineers seeked a better, reliable, and Energy Efficient lightbulb. Long before the CFL came into play, fluorescents were already in the market for commercial use in the early-mid 1900's. It wasn't unitl in the late 1900's that G.E.'s Engineer Edward. E. Hammer invented the first Compact Fluorescent. The goal was to provide many of these compact bulbs to replace the not so energy efficient and extremely hot bulbs like the incandescent and halogens. CFL consumed 1/3 of energy, provided an impressive amount of lumens, and was outlasting the orginal bulbs by thousands of hours. Then only drawback, it contains Mercury ( which is toxic to all humans, animals, and plants). After the Envirnonmental Act of 1969, CFL were in jeopardy. Mainly becuase of its toxic element, its slow start to brightened up, and the proper disposal at your nearest recycling center, was simply inconvenient for many consumers. In 2016, G.E. stopped production of the CFL's (not to be confused with Linear Fluorescents) and concentrated on LED production. CFL's continue to be in the market, but not for long. They do come in all sorts of sizes, Kelvin Temperatures, shapes, and many are dimmable. We stock and can order most of the CFL's. Give us a call or stop by to learn or order your CFL today. • What are LED bulbs?
Light-emitting Diode, In a very simple way of explaining how LED's function. They are simply Diodes that have semiconducting materials that produce light and color for a fraction of energy consumption and produce an impressive amount of lumens (brightness). LED's were developed in the early 1960's and produced one color, red. It wasn't until the early 1990's, Electronic engineer; Shuji Nakamura, invented the blue color LED which opened the doors for producing the LED's of today. Along with Hiroshi Amano (physicist) and Isamu Akasaki, (physicist) all three received the 2014 Noble Prize for Physics. As you could see, the LED technology was a grand step in the lighting industry for mankind. Today, LED have rapidly replaced many Incandescent, halogen, and CFL bulbs throughout the world. Becuase of their impressive low engery consumption, dimming capability, no mercury based elements, out performing , and out living their competitors. It is simply a one sided battle, to be recognized as the bulb to have for all sorts of application. Mass production of LED have been going on strong for over 10 years replacing all sorts of bulb sizes like; Par, BR, A-19, Linear, Torpedo, BT, MR16, Minatures, and many more. Many of these bulbs are not only extremely reliable but are backed with a standard 3-5 year warranty. You can select different Kelvin temperatures to enhance any color of room. Dimmable. Very low heat output as well as a solid Lumen output. Call us today or swing by our showroom to see for yourself the power and technology the LED bulb offers.
  • What are H.I.D (High Intesity Discharge) bulbs?
Also known as Metal halides, High pressure sodium, low pressure sodium, mercury vapor, tree lighting, and moon lighting. HID technology has been around since the early 1700's, and have no intention of being swept out of the market by LED technology, yet. In a simple way of describing how or what an H.I.D bulb is, is simply electrodes creating an arc, which amplifies noble gas that was set within the sealed glass which then melts and evopartes any metallic mixture to create and continue creating illumination for thousands of hours. H.I.D. in general for many years, have been a great source for illuminating warehouses, commercial, residential, and in motor/or marine vehicles. Their production of lumens is far much more impressive than that of a regular lightbulb, and require a transformer to help facillitate voltage needed to enhance and maintain the intensity level through its operation. The drawback for all H.I.D bulbs, is that they produce a high number of UV rays which is diffused by its own UV blocker, this can be an issue for humans, animals, and plant life. Proper disposal of HID's need to be taking into consideration and follow the city's rules and regulation by calling your nearest recycling center. Here at Houston Lighting, We continue to sell many different types of HID and if you have any questions, feel free to contact us during our business hours.
